Explain how 'Little Mix - Black Magic' music video uses Media Language
(15 marks)
Media language is the way in which a media text is shown to the audience. An element of media language is how the narrative is portrayed. The narrative is the story in the music video. The narrative of the video portrays four unpopular high school girls who become popular through the use of a magic recipe which also gives them superhuman powers. Another way media language is use through the video is the setting. The setting is where the narrative of the story takes place. The setting of this music video is throughout a high-school, which has an American theme to it. The high-school setting makes the characters make more sense, as there are different personalities portrayed in the video, which makes it all-the-more relatable. Camera shots were key in the music video. It is essential for a record label to promote their artists as in the end it leads to more money-making. Having wide shots of the band gives the audience a sense of togetherness between the group, and sees them all as best friends. However, having individual close-ups gives each artist more identity, without each one just looking as part of a group. Mid-shots help keep a focus on a star image, as it presents the artists face, as well as the costume or outfits they where. The outfits can display a mood within a music video, although in this case it gives the artist identity, as well as show the audience new trends these celebrities are setting. This is key for record labels promoting their stars. This video can be seen as a change of representation in the band. Before, Little Mix were seen as a polite, inspirational group of girls who arrived onto the scene in the X-Factor in 2011. This video marked a change from being hardly sexualized, to very sexualized. The costumes the band wears are much more revealing than costumes they had worn in previous videos. As much as Little Mix targets a teenage girl audience, the revealing clothes promotes the notion of looking amongst the male audience. This is also known as the male gaze theory.
