Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics:

- uses teenage characters as it is aimed at teenagers who can relate
- shots of the group singing and acting out some lyrics is common in pop videos
- on-trend, fashionable clothing worn will be idolized by the audience
- after the transformation the group becomes cool which is a characteristic of the pop genre
- shots of both the whole band and it's individual members continue the pop theme

There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. The lyrics are represented with images:

- the video follows a story about unpopular girls who find a magic recipe and then become attractive
- as it follows a narrative, it makes the relationship between the lyrics and visuals more discrete

There is a relationship between music and visuals. The tone and atmosphere of the visual reflects that of the music:

- the music video uses the beat of the music to reflect the atmosphere of the visuals
- the group's movements match certain points of the song
- the use of the magic was anticipated because of the title of the song so it was over dramatized
- having the band sing to the camera makes the lyrics they use more personal
- this shows the audience another side of the band

The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist:

- there is a need of individual shots as well as the group as a whole
- there is a direct focus and the band and the song by the end of the video
- there is a variation of styles between each member of the band
- as the audience is majority female, they can relate to the characters portrayed in this video

There is a frequent reference to the notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body:

- there is a lot of people looking at other people in this film
- natural lighting with the arch in the background keeps each band member as the center of attention
- with the spotlight on the band members it promotes the notion of looking clearly
- the mean girl at the beginning wearing little clothes makes the geeky characters look inferior to her

The artist may develop motifs or iconography that recur across their work:

- the group have a laid back approach when it comes to dancing, which is a theme for female artists
- the girls don't follow a specific dance routine
- they also don't all do the same thing at once all the time
- the band however like to provide a dramatic story element which sometimes matches choreography

There are often intertextual references:

- this story line is popular amongst many teenage films
- for example, they are similar to Mia from 'Princess Diaries'
- another intertextual reference is to 'Freaky Friday', which involves the use of potions with teenagers
